A Gold Key – Local High School Student Honored
At Regional Art Competition
Slaton High School’s Gabriela Olivares, sophomore, was recognized this past weekend at the Scholastic Art and Writing Regional Competition for receiving a Gold Key Medal for her mosaic “Colorful Bloom.”
Gabriela’s composition was completed at the end of the 2012 – 2013 school years in Art Club, an after-school program offered to all students at the high school. She spent numerous hours hammering glass, gluing each piece individually and calculating the best placement in order to create the flower which is the emphasis of her composition.
“Colorful Bloom” received an elite Gold Key Medal which qualifies Olivares and her composition to be judged at a national level. The national results will be delivered to Gold Key Medalists on Monday, March 17th. If her composition is selected to move forward, “Colorful Bloom” will proceed to New York and be placed in a national exhibit with student’s art from around the United States.
Each year Wayland Baptist University and the Abraham Gallery host the art and writing competition. Student’s compositions are selected at the school level, transported to WBU in Plainview, TX, and entered into a large competition against many 1A through 5A schools from the region. This year there were approximately 415 compositions selected from local schools to be featured in the exhibit, but only a select few receive the Gold Key Medal.
The West Texas Regional 2014 Scholastic Art Competition Exhibit is located at the Abraham Gallery in the Maybee Learning Resources Center at Wayland Baptist University and will be open to the public until Friday, February 14, 2014.
