From Dr Pastor Cleve Kerby
Beyond Your Breath – Sunday evening, May 17th at First Baptist Church, 255 S. 9th in Slaton.
It is natural for parents to want to protect and provide for their children. We take them to the doctors when they are sick. We make sure they get to school on time. We save as much as possible for their college fund. We celebrate when they get married, not to mention the joy we share when they have children of their own. We want the very best possible for our children.
One of the greatest gifts you can present to your children which we often overlook is failing to take care of an issue that wasn’t even an issue a few years ago. There was a time where the ambiguity between life and death was clearer than it is today. When your heart stopped you died. But now, with modern medical advances, an entire new set of issues arrive. Those are the “What if” questions facing every family and individual today. These are questions a loving parent will have settled. A loving parent should never place such a burden upon their children.
“What if” I get sick with a terminal Illness? “What if” I am in an accident that leaves me brain dead?” Do I want to be on machines? If so, how long do I want them to keep me “alive”? “What if” something happens to me and I need someone else to make those decisions for me? Should I designate someone for that? Who should I entrust with the legal power to act in my behalf if I can’t? “What if…”
A wise parent not only provides for their children, they also should plan to protect them as well. Some families are so emotionally distraught they become fractured and never speak to one another again. Some have experienced such deep quilt over decisions they made, they find it difficult to have peace in their own heart, “Did I make the right decision?”
“Beyond Your Breath” is purposed to help you settle those issues and answer those questions before your children face that issue. Chaplain Larry Cothrim from University Medical Center will be guiding us during this program. It will be Sunday evening, May 17th at First Baptist Church, 255 S. 9th in Slaton.
