JH INFORMATION

Slaton Jr. High took a team of four 8th grade students to compete in the RoboRave in Albuquerque, NM. This was an international event for robotics that was attended by 14 countries and over 1700 students. There were a variety of robotic activities and Slaton chose to participate in the Aerial Response Challenge which used drones. The premise behind the challenge was to fly through an obstacle course in less than 3 minutes. Obstacles included flying through hoops, landing on a boot heel, picking up a payload that could be carried through the rest of the course for extra points if it made it to the final target, navigating through a cave, flying through wind tunnels, navigating ski gates, and finally landing in a bulls-eye target zone.

The boys had to complete 10 scored runs over the three days and their top 5 scores counted. This was our first year attending the event and really didn’t know what to expect. We went more to learn and more than ecstatic for our results! Our team is made up of all 8th graders: Carter Emerson, Nate Castillo, Keaton Truelock, and Saige Rodriguez.

They came in second place with China scoring 1st, Mexico scoring 3rd, and a team from Carlsbad scoring 4th. As one of the boys commented on the way home, “We went to learn and came home a legacy!” I have never been more honored to have coached such a great group of Tigers!
