MIRACLES CHRISTMAS PARADE
Texas Tech Masked Rider serving as Grand Marshall
LUBBOCK—The Texas Tech Masked Rider will serve at the Grand Marshall for the 9th Annual 34th Street Miracles Christmas Parade, Saturday, December 7, 2013, in Lubbock. The announcement came from Andy Turner, Miracles Christmas Parade Chairman.
The lighted parade has remained hugely popular for Lubbock and South Plains residents. More than 25,000 spectators attend every year. The parade is not only fun, it benefits Toys for Tots and the U.S. Marines participate in the parade, gathering unwrapped toys from spectators lining 34th Street from Toledo, moving east to University Avenue. Area chambers of commerce, churches, youth groups, non-profit organizations, marching bands, and spectators are being invited to participate in the 34th Street parade. Entry forms and more information is available at: www.miraclesparade.com.
The parade begins at 6 p.m. and there is still time for people to make plans to participate in the parade and promote their towns and organizations. According to Parade Chairman Andy Turner, the deadline to be a participant is December 3rd. More information is available by contacting Mr. Turning at 806-771-0045.
The theme of this year’s annual parade is “A Country Christmas” and many participants have already signed up to make the 90 minute ride or walk down historic 34th Street in Lubbock, which has undergone several months of remodeling, including the installation of new, stylish streetlights and enhanced concrete walkways and sidewalks. The updating and remodeling effort is transforming the street into a people-friendly and unique street to shop, eat, and do business. More than 600 Lubbock merchants are located on 34th Street. This year’s parade will provide area visitors the chance to view and enjoy the street itself while also enjoying the “Country Christmas” parade.
Last year, the parade featured for the first time, a group of antique tractors covered with Christmas lights. Members of the South Plains Antique Tractor Association had a great time and saw thousands of children and families enjoy their tractors. They will again participate and are expecting even more tractors to crank up and make the drive down Lubbock’s historic 34th Street, according to SPATA member Jim Johnson from Abernathy.
The Miracles Christmas Parade is free for spectators. Everyone in the South Plains is invited to line 34th Street and enjoy the colorful, lighted parade and even cook out doing their own “parade tailgate party” as many families and groups do each year. Spectators are urged to bring unwrapped toys for the Marines’ Toys for Tots drive. Toys will be collected along the parade route by Marines in uniform.
