l-abbott-obit-picSLATON-Linda Kay Abbott, 73, of Lubbock, formerly of Slaton passed away Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016, after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, 2016, in Englunds Chapel with Deacon Adam Behnke officiating. Graveside services will be Monday at 3 p.m. in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, in Moore, OK, under the direction of Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton. Linda was born Oct. 11, 1943, to Jack and Faye (McKey) Blackstone in Shawnee, OK. She graduated from Ada High School in 1962. Linda married Lester Douglas Abbott on July 7, 1962, in Ada, OK. They moved to Slaton in 1967. She worked in customer service for TG&Y and later at Howdy’s in Slaton until 1992 when they returned to Oklahoma City. Linda managed the Ambassador Apartment Complex in Oklahoma City retiring in 2010 and returning to Slaton. Doug preceded her in death in Dec. of 1993. She was also preceded in death by her son, Kenneth D. Abbott in 2009; and her brother, Johnny Blackstone. Linda is survived by: her daughter, Monica and husband, Monty Linder of Slaton; grandchildren, Heather Coats (Jared) of Lubbock, Jarrod Abbott of Corpus Christi, Rebekah Hybner (Samuel) of Slaton; and great-granddaughter, Evelyn Coats; a sister, Betty Riney and (Mike) of Slaton; a brother, Pat (Tracy) Blackstone of Tecumseh, OK; sister-in-law, Dee Blackstone of Shawnee, OK; along with numerous nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorials to Mercy Manna in Slaton, Texas.

Rev. Mr. Darris D. Linder

d-linder-obit-picSLATON-Rosary services for Darris D. Linder, 74, of Slaton will be 6:30 PM Sunday, Nov. 20, 2016 in St Joseph Catholic Church. Celebration of life service will be 10 AM, Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2016 in Slaton’s St. Joseph Catholic Church with Co-Celebrants Rev. Chacko Thadathil and Rev. Monsignor Nicolas Rendon officiating. Burial will follow in Englewood Cemetery under the direction of Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton. Darris was born Oct. 3, 1942 in Austin, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents Audie and Margaret (Farmer) Linder and his step-mother, Betty Jean Linder. Darris passed from this life Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2016. Darris married Jeanette Ann Buxkemper on September 30, 1961 in St. Joseph Catholic Church. Darris moved to Slaton with his family in 1952. He graduated from Slaton High School and attended Draughn’s Business College. He worked for Wendels, Montgomery Wards, J.C. Penney’s, Radio Lab, Tersco, and Professional Electronics. He retired in 1997. He became Administrator for Mercy Center in 1981 and Director in 1997, retiring in October of 2015. Darris and Jeanette began Mercy Manna in Slaton in 2003, a ministry that distributes food and clothing to hundreds in their local community every month. He was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and was ordained a Deacon in October of 1977. Darris was a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, a member of Ministerial Alliance, active in Walk to Emmaus from 2000 to 2013 participating in over 60 walks. He is a past member of Lions Club and had served on the Slaton City Council. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Jeanette, son Monty and wife Monica Linder, daughter Cheryl Linder-Murra, all of Slaton, son Toby and wife Teresa Linder of Dallas, TX, and son Darius and wife Stacey Linder of League City, TX, five grandchildren, one great granddaughter; brother Wayne and wife Linda Linder of Lubbock; in-laws, Joe and Eunice Lee Schilling of Amarillo and numerous nieces and nephews. A fund raiser for Slaton Meals on Wheels will start Nov. 11 thru Nov. 19.  It will be held at the United Supermarket in Slaton.

You donate $5.00 to our Meals on Wheels and receive a coupon for a frozen Sara Lee pie.  Thank you for your support!

Please Note: ALL DONATIONS MADE IN SLATON STAY IN SLATON.  Any donations made in Lubbock stay in Lubbock.

This fund raiser is possible because of the generosity of United Supermarket and the Sara Lee Corporation.  We appreciate their support of our Meals on Wheels!

Bingo on Monday had 24 players.  The secret prize was won by John Ramirez.  The blackout amount of $46.85 was won by Rufina Perez.  Come next Monday for lunch and have a lot of fun.

Community Clothing Drive for Coats, Jackets, and Hoodies!

There will be a clothing drive for coats starting on November 28th-December 9th. Please donate to this great cause. Donation sites can be found on any Slaton ISD campus, the central office, or People’s Bank. Those who donate a coat, jacket, or hoodie will receive a complimentary ticket to any 2016-2017 SISD junior high or high school basketball game.

Slaton Ministerial Alliance hosting Thanksgiving Event

The Slaton Ministerial Alliance is hosting a Thanksgiving Event on Sunday, November 20th at 6PM. This event will be held at The First Baptist Church. Bro. David Gerhardt from United Methodist Church will be speaking at this event. An offering will be collected to benefit the Alliance’s Benevolt Fund. These funds will go directly to assist in meeting the needs of Slatonites.

Charity Bingo Night is Tomorrow Night!

A group of Slaton citizens has scheduled a charity bingo night on November 17th. They will sponsoring several families for Christmas this year and helping them with their needs for the holidays. Bingo cards will be $10 for 10 paper games. Half of the proceeds go towards the families and the other half will go to the bingo winners. Events begins 6PM-8PM at the Earl Powell Community Center (335 E. Powers). Donations are also being accepted.

St. Joseph’s Thanksgiving Lunch Fundraiser is Tomorrow!

Saint Joseph’s School will be having their annual Cafeteria’s Fundraiser Thanksgiving Lunch. This will be on Thursday, November 17th at Saint Joseph’s Hall starting at 11AM-1PM. Plates are $8 for adults and $5 for children.
