Celebrating their birthdays September 28th were Sandy Goodner, Ralph Bravoco, and Karen Drowns.  Fred and Deanne Watson celebrated their anniversary.

After lunch there were three tables of Bridge.  Those playing were Bob Adams, Jo Ann Williams, Jimaileen Jenson, Troyce Wood, Pat Davis, Rob Hiner, Ralph Bravoco, Marge Zinck, J. D. Zinck, Sandra Voigt, Cherie Poer, and Steve Campbell.

Those elected for the three openings on the board were Mark Meurer, Janis King, and Niki Dominguez. Male volunteers of the year was Raymond Garcia.  There was a four way tie for female volunteer of the year, Janis King, Jeannette Bradford, Janet James, and Gloria Olivares.

Congratulations to all of you.

Bingo on Monday had 21 players.  The secret prize was won by Gloria Anzley.  The blackout amount of $48.30 was won by Sandy Goodner. Come next week for lunch and have a lot of fun. If there is anyone out there would like to write this article, please contact Charlotte at 828-3784.

Slaton Chamber of Commerce Trunk or Treat!

Dear Community Member,

The Slaton Chamber of Commerce is hosting the annual community-wide “Trunk-or-Treat” for Halloween night, October 31st, on the Town Square. Children from local and area schools are invited to join us for the fun. The Board of Directors invite you to participate with a “trunk” for the night’s festivities. This is a chance to show-off your business, support the community and have a little fun!

Set up will begin in the City Hall parking lot and move to the south side of the square as needed. The south street will be barricaded, allowing only trunk-or-treat vehicles in. We will begin handing out treats by 6:00 PM and go until approximately 7:00 PM; or until the treats run out.

Daniel Wayne Liles

Dadaniel-lilesniel Wayne Liles SLATON-Wayne Liles, 96, of Slaton, passed away Monday, Oct. 3, 2016. Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, 2016, at First Baptist Church with Dr. Cleve Kerby officiating. Graveside services will follow in Englewood Cemetery, under the direction of Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton. The family will have a visitation from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016, at Englunds. Wayne was born Aug. 27, 1920, in Vernon. He moved with his family to Slaton at the age of seven. He graduated Slaton High School in 1938. Wayne served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Wayne married Larue Jefferson on Oct. 4, 1941, in Orange, Texas, and they moved to Slaton in 1946. Larue preceded him in death on April 14, 2008. Wayne operated Liles Sheet Metal Heating/Air Conditioning business. He was a salesman for Westway Supply and managed Kermit Lumber in Slaton, retiring in 1985. Wayne was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, Church Treasurer, and taught Sunday school until age 94. Wayne is survived by his daughter, Sue Dodson and husband, John Butch of Slaton; two grandchildren, Denise Shirley and husband, Tim and D’Ann Dodson; and two great-grandchildren, Sam and Sarah Shirley. Memorials may be made be to First Baptist Church, PO Box 378, or Slaton’s Meals on Wheels 230 W. Lynn, both of Slaton, TX 79364

Dominga Rojas Briseno

domingaDominga Rojas Briseno SLATON-Rosary for Dominga R. Briseno, 93, of Slaton, will be Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016, at 6:30 p.m. in Englunds Chapel. Celebration of Mass Service will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016, in Slaton’s Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Rev. Chacko Thadathil, officiating. Interment will follow in Englewood Cemetery under the direction of Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton. Dominga was preceded in death by her husband, Santiago Jimmy Briseno. Those left to cherish her memory are her children; a son, Jimmy Briseno, Jr. of Plano; four daughters, Jane Briseno of New Orleans, Antonia B. Rodriguez of Plano, Reyna Peshlakai of Slaton, Linda Salinas of Princeton, Texas; and 16 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
