Help Raise Funds for Kamryn Barrera & Kolbi McCord – USSSA Fastpitch Softball World Series in Orland

McCTwo girls from Slaton invited to the USSSA Fastpitch Softball World Series in Orlando, Florida on July 16-23, 2016.

They play on the West Texas Cyclones, an 8U fastpitch softball travel team that participates in ASA and USSSA tournaments across Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma

Currently Ranked #1 in the nation in their division!!

Only 1 loss this season with an average runs differential of 12, meaning in each game they play, on average the Cyclones score 12 more points than their opponent.

Competed in the May Day Madness tournament this past weekend in Amarillo and won 1st place

-The girls played in freezing temperatures, strong winds, rain and sleet and played 9 games this weekend to take home the championship!

Kamryn Barrera is a 3rd grade student at Cathlene Thomas Elementary

Kolbi McCord is a 2nd grade student at Cathlene Thomas Elementary and also plays on the Punishers, a Little League kid pitch team in Slaton

An invitation to the World Series in Florida is a great honor awarded to only the top teams in the Nation and the team is honored to be able to represent West Texas at an event of this magnitude.  The World Series will be held at the ESPN World Wide of Sports Complex in Kissimmee Florida and will be nationally televised.  The team will also get free admittance to Disney World for receiving an invitation to the World Series!  We are eagerly looking forward to these games and have been training for quite some time to prepare for this once in a lifetime opportunity.

As you can imagine, the cost of competing in the World Series is overwhelming, so your support for the athletes in your local community would mean so much to our team.  In order to make it to Florida, our team must raise a large amount of money to fund the trip and pay for items such as airfare, hotel, tournament fees, and entry fees just to name a few.  For those wishing to help the Cyclones get to Florida, Donations can also be made at any City Bank location in Lubbock to the team account under the name West Texas Cyclones or to our GoFundMe account under West Texas Cyclones- World Series.

Funeral services for Arlen Stennett, 81, of Acuff

 arlen(Acuff) Funeral services for Arlen Stennett, 81, of Acuff, will be 2:00 pm, Tuesday, May 3rd at the Church of Christ in Idalou, TX with Vestal Blakely and David Burton officiating. Interment will follow in Idalou Cemetery under the direction of Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton. The family will have a visitation Monday, May 2nd, 2016 from 6 to 7:30 pm at Englunds in Slaton.  Arlen passed from this life Friday, April 29, 2016.
   Arlen was born March 4, 1935 in Lubbock, Texas to Bill and Bonnie Stennett.  He was an only child and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1952.  After high school he began working on the family farm and shortly after, married Ernestine Harkey on October 25, 1952 in Portales New Mexico.  They have been married 63 years.
   Arlen was a collector of many things or as told by close family members; he was a “connoisseur of junk”. Arlen was raised on the family farm, and he lived there his entire life.  In his younger years he was an avid deer hunter and his love for Christmas never faded through the years.  Arlen loved being around his grandchildren and great grandchildren, and he was surrounded by family until his passing.  Arlen was a member of the Church of Christ
   Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Ernestine Stennett of Acuff; sons Gary and Betty Stennett of Tahoka, Cary and wife Judy Stennett of Acuff; and a daughter Kathy Jackson of Acuff; grandchildren, Stephanie McFadden and husband Brandon, Bonnie Thompson, and husband Kerry, Courtney Stennett, Ty Blackwell, Shannon Locke and husband David, Amanda Ledbetter and husband Shaun, Sloan Jackson and wife Caitlin; great grandchildren, M’Kenna McFadden, Cameron McFadden, Corley Locke, Parker Locke, Ryder Thompson, Brooklyn Jackson and soon to be Davis Thompson who is due in July.             Arlen was preceded in death by a grandson Clay Jackson on January 13, 2000 and his parents.

CELEBRATE SLATON’S HERITAGE: HELP SAVE THE ‘LITTLE RED CABOOSE’

SLATON, TEXAS —

“We invite anyone with a heart for history to ‘climb aboard’ and help us renovate Slaton’s precious ‘little red caboose,’” said Jessica Kelly, manager of the Slaton Harvey House Bed & Breakfast and Event Center. “Our caboose is an icon of Slaton’s heritage and our board of directors wants to treat it with respect.”

Because of that commitment, the Slaton Railroad Heritage Association (SRRHA) recently announced an effort to raise at least $1,000 to restore the weather battered wooden caboose that graces the front lawn at Slaton’s Harvey House.

“The SRRHA received a $1,000 grant from the National Railway Historical Society in April,” said Kelly. “Our directors look to match and exceed that grant to complete an exterior and, eventually, interior restoration of this classic caboose.”

The former Fort Worth and Denver Railroad caboose, which dates back to the early twentieth century, is one of the last standing and documented wooden cabooses in the country, according to Kelly.

“We hope to generate widespread support for this effort,” said Kelly. “The role of the railroad in West Texas’ history is unparalleled. Many of the families that began our towns worked for the railroad… and most of the farmers who worked the fields of the Great Plains depended on the railroad to deliver their supplies and transport their crops.”

The volunteer directors of the SRRHA, the governing board of Slaton’s Harvey House, hope to raise the $1,000 required in matching funds by May 30, 2016

“We’re told that William H.  Watson of Lubbock used the caboose as his traveling office for some time, latching it to the train to travel from town to town, conducting business within its walls,” said Kelly. “The rail crew car was donated to the Slaton Harvey House by Mr. Watson together with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Rand McPherson of Ransom Canyon, where the caboose stood until moved.”

            The Slaton Harvey House, a landmark Santa Fe Railroad facility built in 1912, was part of a chain of eating rooms created by Fred Harvey in 1876. The kitchen staff and hostesses — known as Harvey Girls — provided fine dining to passengers and townspeople alike for more than 30 years.

            The two-story Mission Revival structure features concrete walls a foot thick and a parapet decorated with Santa Fe Railway symbols.

            Today, the Slaton Harvey House has been restored to its former status as host to travelers, providing bed and breakfast service and an archive of Slaton’s railroad heritage artifacts. The beautiful building also serves as an intimate event center for meetings, conferences, and receptions.

Weekend Snack Sack Program FUND RAISER – YOU CAN HELP!

plantsHi y’all!  I hope everyone is doing great and is ready for summer!  The Weekend Snack Sack Program has had a great year and has finished up strong providing 435 sacks weekly to the kiddos of SFA & CTE.  We sacked for the last time this past Tuesday and will resume in August.  We have been blessed this year with many new volunteers and are so excited to have you all!  The sacking group is a lot of fun;  we get the job done and enjoy a time of fellowship as well.  We can’t thank you all enough for what you do for this program!  The need is great in our community and we appreciate all you give in the way of contributions and service, it takes all of you to make this program work!  We are selling plants for a fundraiser right now.  The plants are Dew,  in 10″ hanging baskets, and the cost is $20 each. These are very hardy plants, drought tolerant, and can be left in the hanging basket or used in pots or as a ground cover.  I usually use them in pots, and they’ve worked very well for me.  I am attaching a picture of the plants so you will all know what they look like.  The blooms are either pink, yellow, or mixed.  If you are interested in purchasing a plant they will be at the Antique Mall tonight, or you can give Donna Englund or myself a call and we will be glad to take your order.  Many of you have already purchased plants and we thank you very much!  We will be having other fundraisers going on throughout the summer and into the Fall.   Again, we appreciate each of you and all you do to make this program possible.
