A group of alumni representing classes from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s has gotten together to work on getting a grave marker for Coach Kerr and Mrs. Kerr. Jo Carpenter Ray has gotten in touch with Robin Kerr and has Robin’s verbal agreement to let us do this. I work for an attorney, so he is helping me to get written permission from Robin. We have to have written permission from her to satisfy the legalities of it. We have written to Robin and are waiting to get that back from her. She has been very gracious in working with us on this, and is very touched that we are honoring her parents in this way.

We are also going to do a plaque to place at High School honoring Coach Kerr. This year marks the 30th anniversary of his retirement from Slaton ISD. We are planning a dedication ceremony for Saturday, July 5, 2014 at the High School Auditorium. The Class of 1984 is having their 30 year reunion that weekend, and the dedication ceremony will be held in conjunction with their reunion.

Sherri Conner Henley, who grew up as a neighbor to Coach and Mrs. Kerr, and who owns Slaton Monument, is a part of the planning group, and she is designing the marker and plaque. Both will be done out of black granite. The marker will have the standard information, in addition to a tiger head (similar to the tiger head on the Tiger Tags that we had in school and the tiger inset in the floor of Senior Hall), as well as an image of Coach Kerr’s classic car and victory bell that he brought to games and school functions. It will also have pictures of Coach Kerr and Mrs. Kerr.

Donations can be mailed to KERR MEMORIAL, c/o Harvey L. Morton, Attorney at Law, Attn Dana Boyd, PO Box 10305, Lubbock, Texas 79408. Checks should be made payable to “Kerr Memorial”. Funds will be deposited to Mr. Morton’s Attorney/Client Trust Account. All funds received will be used to pay for the marker and the plaque. Any remaining funds will be donated to the Gary Kerr Memorial Scholarship at Slaton High School.

Thank you in advance for joining us in honoring Coach and Mrs. Kerr.
