The Slaton Tiger & Tigerette powerlifting teams traveled to Abernathy on Thursday February 12th.
The Tigers finished with 8 overall medalists, three of those being 1st place finishes, to tie for 1st as a team with Sundown. The Tigers lost the tie-breaker (number of 1st place finishes) and were thus awarded 2nd place overall.
Freshman Philip Rocha Squatted 235lbs, then broke school records in the bench press (125lbs), deadlift (275lbs), and total with 635lbs on his way to a gold medal finish in the 114lb class.
Braxton Creager squatted 420lbs, benched a school record 230lbs, and Deadlifted 450 to wrap up a gold medal in the 181’s with an 1100lb total.
And Marcial Salinas squatted 400lbs, benched 230lbs, and deadlifted 475lbs to total 1110 and take 1st in the 242’s.
Also medaling for the Tigers were:
2nd place 165’s Tyler Johnson with a 445 squat, 190 bench, and 365 deadlift (1000lb total)
2nd place 220’s Harley Simpson with a 500lb Squat, 250lb bench, and 420lb deadlift (1175 total)
3rd place 220’s David Camargo 450 squat, 235 bench, 430 deadlift (1115 total)
3rd Place Super Heavyweights AJ Garcia – 360, 250, 350 (965 total)
4th place 165’s Javier Alcorta 310, 180, 340 (845 total)
5th place SHW’s Alek Garcia 365, 165, 405 (935 total)
Another notable lift was Tyler Irby’s school record bench of 245lbs in the 198’s.
Also lifting for the Tigers were Anthony Garcia, Conner Watts, David Mendez, Alex Espinoza, Antonio Ybarra, Christopher “CJ” Flores, and Joshua Salas.
The Tigerette’s also had a great showing with every girl increasing her total from the previous meets, lifting as following:
1st place Kristi Castillo
1st place Rachel Payne
1st place Paula Ballejo
3rd place Oralia Cardenas
6th place Samantha Valdez
The girls next meet is their last chance regional qualifier in Andrews, February 21st.
Slaton will be hosting its’ first ever Powerlifting meet in the Old Gym February 26th, for the boys last chance to qualify for Regionals. We would like to invite anyone interested to come support either team, and fill the stands at the Slaton Meet.
