Slaton High – Giving Tree

It’s That Time of the Year Again

By: Jamie Armenta

Christmas is fast approaching and this year Lynn Melton, a teacher at Slaton High School, is helping with an event called the SHS Giving Tree. This Christmas season the event will be assisting the City of Slaton to help kids of Slaton receive Christmas gifts.

According to Lynn, the SHS Giving Tree is a “FCCLA service project” and they collect “toys, donations and gifts for children and teens in Slaton from ages 1-17.” This year the project has 83 kids to get gifts for. Lynn informed us that the event has been going on for “about 8 years and that each year the event continues to grow.” The event benefits the community of Slaton because it provides kids who otherwise may have not even got a gift with an experience they won’t forget. Lynn told us the event “builds a positive relationship between high school students and the community.”

For anyone wanting to get involved with this event all they have to do is go by room 401 at SHS and pull a tag with their choice of boy or girl and which age group. After purchasing a gift just bring it back unwrapped by December 17th and do your part to make a kids Christmas magical.
