Where Your Treasure Is (Matt 6:19-24)

CurtisBakerBy Curtis Baker

As we continue on in our study of Matthew chapter six in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, we now come to one of the more uncomfortable subjects of the sermon.  Remember, beginning in chapter six, Jesus has been warning people about trying to secure themselves by anything but God and his kingdom.  Over the last several weeks we have been exploring how people try to secure themselves by means of their religious reputation.  This is trying to appear religious and devout while actually being something else in the inward depths of the heart.  Jesus used the specific examples of giving, prayer, and fasting to illustrate his point.  Beginning in Matthew 6:19, however, Jesus turns his attention to a more common way we attempt to secure ourselves–through material possessions.

Southland Youth Complete CERT Training at Summer Camp

Southland EYLby Supt Toby Miller, Southland (email submission)

Nine Southland teens and one advisor were accepted to attend Extreme Youth Leadership (EYL) Training Camp to receive Teen CERT training June 24-28, 2013. Sponsored by the Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC), the camp was held at Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas.

According to Superintendent Miller, this group approached him with a concern about emergency preparedness and asked how they could help the Southland School and Community should a disaster occur.  The TEEN CERT Program educates young adults about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills.  The teen CERT emphasizes being a part of a team to assist first responders during a disaster.
