$1000 Each Awarded to Mercy Manna, Meals on Wheels, the Weekend Sack Program, and the Harvey House
Grant Awards in the amount of $1000 each were given to Mercy Manna, Meals on Wheels, the Weekend Sack Program, and the Harvey House from the Mercy Ministries Slaton Area Endowment (MMSAE). Thursday night marked the beginning of a legacy for the community of Slaton. A celebration was held at the First Baptist Church Activity Center to congratulate local winners of grant awards. The local endowment program, an affiliate of Lubbock Area Foundation, distributed its first round of checks to much needed organizations that make Slaton a comfortable-friendly place to live. The goal is to have annual distribution of funds to organization in the community on a yearly basis through a simple grant submission process.
Mark Meurer, MMSAE chairman, handed out the checks

$50,000 turned $75,000 Area Endowment
Thursday evening the Mercy Ministries Slaton Area Endowment hosted a fundraising dinner and grant awards celebration (discussed in another article), at the First Baptist Church Activity Center, to celebrate the halfway mark of their 12 month fundraising $100,000 project for the community of Slaton. The organization, an affiliate of Lubbock Area Foundation, reached the halfway mark of raising $50,000 in endowment capital from several generous donors. With that amount and a $25,000 match, from the Lubbock Area Foundation/CH Foundation, brings the total for available endowment to $75,000. The organization, along with the community of Slaton, will begin working on the second half of the original $100,000 goal immediately. $50,000 is planned to be raised between now to mid-December. That goal is to have a minimum of $100,000 collected from the community and a $50,000 match coming from the support of the Lubbock Area Foundation/CH Foundation bringing the grand total with matching funds of $150,000 by mid December.
The organization’s goal is to create a financial legacy for the community of Slaton. The local organization also awarded four $1,000 grants to Mercy Manna, Meals on Wheels, the Weekend Sack Program, and the Harvey House.

TxDOT PREPARES FOR ICY CONDITIONS SUNDAY NIGHT AND MONDA
Feb. 22, 2015
LUBBOCK ─ The Texas Department of Transportation Sunday issued a warning to drivers in north and west Texas to be prepared for a wintry mix that could impact rush hour traffic Monday morning and driving throughout the day. Crews in several TxDOT districts, including the Lubbock District and the 17 counties it serves, have been treating roads in the days leading up to the storm. With temperatures expected to drop near freezing or below, icy weather could wreak havoc in areas for Monday morning commuters.
TxDOT crews have worked throughout the weekend and plan to continue de-icing and treating roads overnight Sunday to reduce the impacts of freezing and refreezing. Despite this work, drivers are urged to use extreme caution because of the potential for black ice, which appears as dry pavement. Ice on bridges and overpasses will continue to be a concern in the impacted areas.
Drivers are urged to follow these precautions:
- Reduce speed. Speed limits are based on normal road and weather conditions, not winter road conditions. Do not use cruise control.
- Maintain at least three times the normal following distance on snow or ice.
- Watch carefully for personnel and equipment treating roadways, and stay at least 200 feet back from road crews.
- Use extra caution on bridges, ramps, overpasses and shaded areas as they tend to freeze first.
- Carry extra warm coats, gloves and boots in case you get stranded.
- If you start to slide, ease off the gas pedal or brakes. Steer into the direction of the skid until you feel you have regained traction, and then straighten your vehicle.
