Slaton ISD Special Board Meeting Moved To Thursday

from Julee Becker, Slaton ISD

Due to possible weather, we will hold the specially called Board meeting on Thursday, February 26 at 7:15 AM. The roads on Tuesday morning may be bad as well. Our boys playoff game has been moved to 8:00pm on Tuesday night in Denver City, so most of us won’t be home until after midnight on Wednesday morning. Hence the need for holding it Thursday morning. Friday is a holiday/no school day!

Flag Day July 14

Flag Day July 14

Flag Day July 14

Flag Day is celebrated on June 14th of each year.  It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened that day by resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777.  The United States Army also celebrates the Army Birthday on this date; Congress adopted “the American continental army” after reaching a consensus position in the Committee of the Whole on June 14, 1775.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day; in August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.

Flag Day is not an official federal holiday, though on June 14, 1937, Pennsylvania became the first (and only) U.S. state to celebrate Flag Day in the town of Rennerdale.  Title 36 of the United State Code, Subtitle I, Part A, Chapter 1 is the official statute on Flag Day; however, it is at the President’s discretion to officially proclaim the observance.

Community Development Gateway Markers

Gateway MarkerThe Chamber of Commerce held a Community Development meeting Thursday to discuss the Vision of Slaton.  About 30 people attended the luncheon held at the City Hall. The initial project that is headed up by a select group of citizens, will research, development and implement community Gateway Makers on both ends of Slaton within areas of Highway 84.  These maker-style signs, similar to ones that are at Post, Sweetwater and Abilene, would greet passersby as they travel up and down the highway encouraging them to visit our community.  The gathering was led by Chamber of Commerce president, Mark Meurer.  The group will meet every three months to continue with different projects.
